The Blackout
On December 7, 1941, Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor. The proximity of the attack made Southern California cautious. As a result, a lot of measures were taken to ensure the safety of Southern Californians. One method was the installation of big coastal guns that were pointed to the ocean in Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, San Pedro, Palos Verdes, El Segundo, and Pacific Palisades. Another measure that was taken were frequent blackouts that took place during night out of fear of air raids. Although California was not attacked in the long run, preparations were made in the event of Japanese aggression.
