Previously before becoming President, Nixon was Vice-President for eight years and served as a U.S. Representative and a U.S. Senator from California. He then lost the 1960 election to John F. Kennedy. The following year Nixon became president on January 20, 1969. Nixon successfully ending American fighting in Vietnam and improving international relations with the U.S.S.R. and China.
